Romantic Backyard Wedding in Savannah, Georgia

March 31, 2020

Originally Emily and Brendan were planning to have a romantic backyard wedding on the first of December with a sunset ceremony and celebration at a family home on Isle of Hope in Savannah, Georgia. I got a call on November 28 from a worried mama of the bride because the 1st was looking like it was going to be a very, very rainy day! She had been calling vendors all afternoon and wanted to know if I’d be able to photograph their wedding one day early to avoid the big storm. I work from home and started this business to be able to have a flexible schedule, so of course I was on board. I’m all for a little rain on a wedding day (it’s supposed to be a good thing, right?), but here in southern Georgia there’s a not-so-fine line between a little rain and a torrential downpour! That’s not to say I don’t believe you can still have your day even if it rains a bit. I am a wedding photographer in Savannah, Georgia after all and I’ve photographed plenty of weddings in the rain and even keep some clear umbrellas in my car at all times in case we get a bit of weather. But, this forecast wasn’t showing a BIT of weather! It was showing a LOT of weather and we all agreed it would be best to avoid it if we could. Perks of having an intimate wedding, no??

I’m so so happy we were all able to switch since their day ended up being PERFECT! They were able to get married under the beautiful live oaks, which Emily draped with flowy white fabric, while the sun set with some of the warmest light I’ve ever seen. I loved the simple decor that didn’t distract from the natural beauty of her family’s property, but rather helped frame it! Brendan met Emily as she walked up the aisle with a sweet kiss and they walked together the rest of the way. It was LOVELY! Have I mentioned the sunset? That perfect orange light that sparkled through the Spanish Moss? It was completely unreal! I’m green with home envy! We stuck close to the house for their portraits and took advantage of the last of that beautiful light that glittered over the river out on the property’s dock. As I’m updating my site and rewriting blog posts these are still some of my favorite portraits I’ve ever taken! It’s incredible the amount of emotion you can get with those last rays of sunlight! After the sun went down Emily and Brendan shared one long banquet table with their closest family and friends, lit only by string lights and candles. Sparkling sunlight to sparkling string lights, I thought the transition was perfect. I left just as the family was sitting down to have dinner together. That last glimpse of a perfectly content, in-love family and newly wed couple was absolutely everything I love about photographing weddings. It was a magical evening to be sure.

Oh, and in case you were wondering, yes! The next day was as rainy and thunderstorm-y as can be!!
